Program Outline

IndonesiaFlagThe two-week intensive international study abroad program provides a multidisciplinary introduction to key concepts in international relations, politics, economics, sociology and anthropology and their uses in the analysis of modern Southeast Asia, with a special emphasis on Indonesia. It covers the historical, political, cultural and social factors that have helped shape Southeast Asia and the ASEAN regional grouping. Organized activities include an excursion to cultural, religious and historical sites in Bali, several study trips, each focusing on a particular theme, as well as team-building activities, including a white-water rafting adventure trip. There will certainly be also ample free time to explore.

The series of lectures will analyze the evolution of Southeast Asian civilization, as a product of the creative cultural life of several different races and peoples inhabiting the region. They will especially focus on the creative processes by which Southeast Asians have been adapting their cultures to the world in change and also factors influencing the emergence and development of Southeast Asia. The participants will also enhance their understanding of institutions, policies, and processes of ASEAN both in its internal and external cooperation, as well as ASEAN’s strategic and economic interests, intentions and capabilities and evaluate how these have contributed to Southeast Asian states’ success or failure in addressing regional and international issues.

In many ways, Indonesia is regarded as perhaps the most important member of ASEAN. Indonesia’s geographic proximity and its growing strategic importance make it vital to understand its peoples, politics, history, languages and cultures. Indonesia is the most influential member of ASEAN and as the fourth most populous country in the world is an increasingly important force in world affairs. Indonesia is culturally diverse, comprising hundreds of different ethnic groups and languages with rich literary traditions, spread over thousands of islands. It has the world’s largest Muslim-majority population but also includes significant Christian, Buddhist and Hindu minorities.

This program will provide you with a broad understanding of contemporary Indonesian culture, politics and society. Expertise in Asian/Indonesian Studies can enhance employment opportunities in commerce, education, government and cultural affairs. It can also serve as the foundation for further research through post-graduate work in Asian/Indonesian Studies. Students will be taught by outstanding faculty members and other leading experts from foreign universities, who have a keen interest in helping students develop fresh perspectives and realise their academic potential while giving them an opportunity for personal development.
